Mpho's career as a singer started in church as a young child. Her interest grew in terms of music and dance by joining Intsikane Marimba Band in 1983. They played and performed in and around Cape Town, where she was spotted by Ringo Madlingozi of Peto. They won the shell 'Road to Fame' in 1986. This made the group to relocate and settle in Johannesburg.

In Johannesburg she met lots of Artists and Musicians some of whom she ended up working with, like Coyote, Pongolo, the late Jito Baloyi, and Thembi Mtshali.

In 1990 Mpho decided to hit the road and come back home to Cape Town. At home she started working with local Bands like Tshisa Band, Ilanga Band with Mlungisi Gegana and Thandanani Band led by Blackie Tempie.

In 1993 she met David Shuping, a pianist and Band Leader. They teamed up together to form their own project called Mpho and Friends, which had only three members. Mpho and David felt that the project needed a more expansive sound. Their vision was to have a sound that is unique with the rich texture of traditional and as well as afro fusion elements in it. Mpho and Uvimba came into existence and grew into an 8 piece band.
